Dawn of War II: Retribution Review

Retribution – Noun. The act of punishing or taking vengeance for wrongdoing, sin, or injury.

In the Warhammer 40,000 Universe, as it quickly becomes clear, there’s plenty of wrongdoing, and therefore plenty of vengeance. As Obi-Wan Kenobi preaches, truths depend greatly on points of view, and, in Warhammer 40,000, there are a lot of points of view: Retribution is the first Dawn of War II game that lets players command any faction throughout the single player campaign. The game is the next chapter in the increasingly complex story of the Blood Ravens Chapter of Space Marines, which is interwoven with the stories of several other factions and characters. There are plot threads here that link back to the very first Dawn of War game in 2004, which is satisfying for those who have followed the series closely, but could prove daunting for newcomers. Will we ever get a good film from a video game?

Despite the relationship between Hollywood and video games being tetchy at best and rarely resulting in a film or game that could be considered good, the last week has brought more news of films being turned into games and games being turned into films. The question of why is rendered mute, for both the game and film industry it is an opportunity to capitalize on a pre-existing source. Do we need another Duke Nukem?

The first time I came across Duke Nukem was in school; someone had uploaded several games to the PCs which we played instead of, y’know, being educated. I was too young to understand the game beyond the idea of shooting aliens in the face. Until recently the appeal of the character or why he had such an ardent fanbase was lost on me. Vanquish Review

Why run and gun when you can slide on your knees and shoot a robot in the head? If there has been something lacking about the third-person genre it is movement. The rigidity of staying in one place (usually in cover) and waiting for the enemy’s head has been a popular staple (at least in most of the third person shooters I’ve played). Splinter Cell: Conviction rectified this in some way with its last known location mechanic. Vanquish? Well, it has you sliding on your knees. Read more…

Fate of the World Review

Fate of the World presents a unique spin on the Grand Strategy genre. Rather than conquering the World, here you must save it. The process is pretty similar: you’ll have various tools and researches at your disposal, as well as limited resources, so you must choose their use wisely. Your adversaries? Climate Change, Energy Crises, Humanitarian Crises and Natural Disasters will all try their best to derail your mission. The game places you as President of the Global Environmental Organisation (GEO), and as such it’s your decisions that will affect the Fate of the World. Read more…

Gray Matter Review

At the centre of Gray Matter are questions regarding the power of the mind. Our entry into these questions are the two contrasting characters of David Styles and Samantha Everett. David is, or was, a highly respected Oxford Professor, though he now lives the life of a recluse in his mansion, Dread Hill House. The students around Oxford spread vicious rumours that he’s insane, and that he conducts horrific experiments. Samantha, or Sam, is a street magician from Washington D.C. She is travelling the world, learning everything she can from other magicians, and has come to Oxford in search of the famed Daedalus Magic Club, hoping to join its ranks. The story begins as Sam breaks down in the middle of a storm, in the middle of nowhere. The only place she can find is Dread Hill House. Pretending to be the expected new Assistant, she stays the night, fully intent on leaving the next morning. Read more…
